Mount Tyler earthquake
The Mount Tyler earthquake occurred in the early Fifth Era, within the Leonstal region of the Ragissarian Republic's capital district. The earthquake epicenter is believed to have emanated from underneath Mount Tyler, the largest peak of the surrounding mountain range. The earthquake resulted in significant landslides, slumps and ground cracks within a range of the western portion of the capital district up to the far north western edges of mainland Lygonia. Two distinct tsunamis also formed off the northern and western coast of Lygonia respectively, as a result from the seismic wave moving westward out from Mount Tyler.
Damage
The earthquake caused severe damage across the span of its westward wave, primarily within the Lygonian Highlands north of the Wahler river. Major effects could be seen in towns such as Sweetberry and New Hammerhorn, where several buildings collapsed, along with multiple caveins in tunnels of the Sweetberry mines. Within the Northern and Sefina seas several ships were also sunk following the tsunamis produced by the quake. In the end the earthquake is estimated to have resulted in the loss of life of some 150 persons, the sinking of 7 ships, and the significant destruction of several towns and pieces of infrastructure.
Origins
It is believed that the earthquake was formed by the natural sudden movement of plates along the northern Easterian fault line, however there remain certain characteristics about the Mount Tyler quake that remain unresolved. The most notable of these is the directionality of the quake, whereas previously documented earthquakes in the region have resulted in quakes that emanate in at least two lateral directions, the Mount Tyler quake moved almost exclusively westward, leaving the eastern territories –including the Republic's capital– unharmed.
